Adult Day Care and In-Home Respite Care

Why Adult Day Care

Adult day care provides an organized program of activities for adults who need supervision. Not only does day care give the caregiver a "time out" from caregiving, but it provides stimulating activites in a safe, comfortable, home-like atmosphere, thus alleviating isolation and providing an opportunity for socialization. It's been proven that those with Alzheimer's/dementia who participate in regularly structured activities fare better than those who remain isolated.

In-Home Respite Care

In-home respite care is available through the ACTO program. Under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, Certified Nursing Assistants are available two or three times a week to assist the client in the home with personal care needs and activities of daily living (ADL). The in-home program is a state licensed home health service which must meet requirements approved by the Georgia Department of Human Resources Office of Regulartory Services, like the day care program.

Adult Day Care Daily Activities

Daily activities are specifically planned for the Alzheimer's/dementia client and include:

  • Exercise (chair aerobics)
  • Reminiscence Therapy
  • Pet Therapy
  • Art Class
  • Music
  • Crafts
  • Games

Special events such as holiday and birthday celebrations are regularly scheduled.

Adult Day Care Nutritional Concerns

Proper nutrition is especially important for Alzheimer's/dementia clients since they often lose interest in eating. A hot nutritious noon meal is served each day and morning and afternoon snacks are also provided. Special-diet meats are available upon request.

Adult Day Care Supervision

Under the direction of trained staff and volunteers, the ACTO client is under constant supervision in a facility which is both safe and secure.

ACTO Caregiver Support Group

The ACTO program has a caregiver support group which meets from 1:30 to 3:00 PM on a monthly basis. Caregivers have the opportunity to leave their loved ones at the center while they attend the meeting. Special programs are offered and speakers present information of interest to caregivers. There are also open discussions where caregivers can share their experiences with others in a similar situation. Any caregiver is welcome to attend.

What ACTO caregivers say about the program:

"I can leave my husband at ACTO and know that he is respected, cared for and loved."

"ACTO gives me time for me."

"I appreciate the ACTO CNA that comes and cares for my dad. It gives me a much needed break."

"I don't know what I would do without ACTO."
